Dr. Lie was born in Suriname (Dutch Guyana) and immigrated to the United States at the age of 3. He grew up in San Francisco's Chinatown and North Beach districts. Dr. Lie graduated from St. Ignatius College Preparatory in 1989, and obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from U.C. Berkeley in 1994. Dr. Lie graduated with honors from the California College of Podiatric Medicine (CCPM) in 1998. He completed the Podiatric Orthopedic Residency at CCPM in 1999 and the Podiatric Surgical Residency at VA San Francisco in 2000. He practiced in Bakersfield, CA from 2000 to 2003 and in Loma Linda, CA from 2003 to 2019. In the Fall of 2019, Dr. Lie returned to the Bay Area and joined the staff of Bay Area Foot and Ankle Associates in Walnut Creek, CA.

Dr. Lie has a special interest in Sports Medicine and was president of the student chapter of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine during his time in podiatry school. Part of Dr. Lie's residency training included a 3 month rotation with Dr. Amol Saxena at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation Department of Sports Medicine. He has served as a medical staff volunteer for events such as the San Francisco Marathon, and Western States 100 Mile Ultramarathon.

In addition he has been a guest speaker for the San Bernardino Pacers and Riverside Road Runners running clubs as well as Fleet Feet Sports (Ranch Cucamonga) and Running Center (Redlands) specialty running stores.

He is a Road Runners Club of America Certified Running Coach, USATF Level 1 Certified Track and Field Coach, Lydiard Foundation Level 1 and 2 Certified Endurance Running Coach and has attended multiple LA84 Foundation Track and Cross Country Coaching Clinics featuring speakers such as coach Jack Daniels and Olympian Jim Ryun. Dr. Lie started running in middle school and currently competes in local running events such as road races, mud run obstacle courses, all-comers cross country and track meets. To promote running as a fun and inclusive activity for people of all abilities, Dr. Lie often "competes" in a costume.
